Floating Crane Vessels – Sudden Loss of Hoist Load

During floating crane vessel operations, the sudden loss of hook loads can result in critical situations. thec offshore assessed this scenario with different analysis approaches: First, the effect of load loss is analyzed employing a multi-body model of vessel and crane boom including luffing gear. Additional cases with the boom rigidly connected to the vessel and a fixed crane pedestal are run for comparison purposes. The plot on the right shows that the vessel motion is hardly affected by the choice of the analysis method. The video below, however, demonstrates that the effect on the crane boom can be critical.
